#29 Willie T. Ribbs becomes first African American to qualify for Indy 500

Countdown to Indy: 100 headlines that shaped the greatest spectacle in racing

Although this year marks the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, “firsts” are still happening.

One of those firsts came back in 1991, when Willy T. Ribbs became the first African American driver to qualify for the race.

Ribbs qualified 29th for Walker Racing out of a field of 33 cars.

He finished 32nd after engine failure on the fifth lap.

We’re counting down the final 100 days until the 100th running of the Indy 500, featuring a classic moment from The Greatest Spectacle in Racing…

The original Ghostbusters is heading back to theaters

The Ghostbusters franchise has a big summer planned already, but Fathom Films just added another event for fans to mark in their calendars. Ghostbusters, the original 1984 comedy, will screen in theaters nationwide this June, in honor of its 34th anniversary.

That’s the reason that Fathom Films claims is behind the theatrical re-release, anyway. Tickets are available starting May 6 for both dates: June 8, with an encore on June 12. But it’s just as likely that Ghostbusters 1.0 is screening in anticipation of the franchise’s new movie, in theaters just…

Tesla Model S "Elizabeta" By LARTE Design Underscores Lightning Performance

No matter how you look at it, the Model S is a sleeper, its unassuming looks hiding an electric powerhouse waiting to be unleashed.

It is no supercar, but the P90D can mix it with the best of them and win. The looks might be too restrained for some owners who want to make its performance credentials a bit more obvious.

This is where Larte Design comes in, as the tuner prepared a striking aerodynamic package that emphasizes the vehicle’s grunt.

Larte named this project the Elizabeta, and the package includes redesigned front and rear bumpers highlighted by a…

Hated encryption bill should prompt U.S. intelligence reform

You don’t need anything decrypted to see that nobody likes the Compliance with Court Orders Act of 2016, the draft encryption bill released two weeks ago. Coauthored by Senators Richard Burr and Dianne Feinstein, the bill would allow courts to order companies to break encryption on communications and devices for law enforcement purposes.

There are plenty of reasons to dislike it. Here are mine, along with some thoughts about what the bill reveals about our government’s approach to intelligence.

1. The proposed bill won’t work as a deterrent to unlawful…

This device could determine if you were texting and driving

Texting and driving continues to be a major problem on today’s roadways and let’s be honest with ourselves – public service announcements alone aren’t going to reverse the trend. Fully autonomous vehicles will negate the issue but those are still many years away.

In the interim, New York lawmakers have proposed implementing a test that would determine if a driver involved in an accident was texting or otherwise using their phone in a manner that may have been distracting and ultimately caused said accident.

The test, dubbed the Textalyzer,…

In line with Google Fiber, Verizon FiOs, and municipal offerings at one-gigabit speeds to the home, the new Comcast service will dramatically increase download speeds. Scientists find a tailless comet from Earth's early days

It’s well-established that the many asteroids and comets in the Solar System are the result of its violent early history, but finding an untouched example from the inner system is difficult. However, an astronomy team has discovered just that — and it might shed a lot of light on our homeworld’s early days. Thanks to both Pan-STARRS 1 and the Very Large Telescope, they’ve spotted a tailless, predominantly rocky comet (C/2014 S3) that has all the telltale signs of a “pristine” asteroid formed in the inner Solar System around the same time…

Are Firefox Add-on Collections dead?

Mozilla introduced Collections to its Firefox Add-ons website (AMO) back in 2009 to provide users of the web browser with options to keep track of add-ons, and to showcase add-ons, for instance by creating themed collections.

It allowed anyone with an account to create and maintain collections by adding add-ons (which included themes) to them.

Creators could add and remove add-ons from collections, and others could follow them to receive notifications about changes made to these collections.

Firefox users benefit from Collections in two ways: collections may help…

Microsoft develops IFTTT rival called Flow for connecting apps and services

Apps like IFTTT (If This Then That) connect services in logical ways: texting your spouse, for example, when you leave work. Microsoft has created a business-oriented preview service called Flow that acts in much the same way, but with its own software and partner apps.

Flow isn’t an app, but a way to connect apps and ask them to do specific tasks. To help users get started, Microsoft has created a series of “templates” of common use cases: for example, having Twitter tweets saved in a CSV file in OneDrive, or having a text sent to yourself when you receive an…

Google has a crazy idea for injecting a computer into your eyeball

Google has filed a patent for what sounds like a bionic eye.

A patent filed in 2014 and published Thursday describes a device that could correct vision without putting contacts in or wearing glasses everyday.

But to insert the device, a person must undergo what sounds like a rather intrusive procedure.

Here’s how it would work: After surgically removing a person’s lens from the lens capsule of his or her eye (ouch!), a fluid would be injected into the capsule. This fluid would act sort of like a glue, allowing whoever is conducting the procedure to attach…

Engadget: ‘Apple iPhone Sales and Revenue Finally Decline’

On the earnings call, CEO Tim Cook gave some context for the iPhone sale slump. Specifically, he said that while iPhone 6S upgrades were outpacing those when the iPhone 5S launched, it hasn’t been able to match the “accelerated” upgrade cycle the company saw when it launched the iPhone 6 in 2014. He said the two other main sources of iPhone buyers come from switchers from other smartphones like Android as well as first-time buyers. In both of those regards, Cook says the business is healthy. The last six months have seen more switchers…

Virtual reality may be a babe in the woods, but it’s growing up fast. The trajectory of innovation has been steep in the past year, as constant experimentation has also helped videographers break new ground in editing and storytelling techniques within the realm of VR. It’s no longer enough to just stick a 360-degree camera rig in an interesting place and let the novelty of watching it on a facemask do all the work. Roaming within the EU has just become cheaper

The new roaming caps introduced today, alongside stricter European net neutrality rules, will also be the last such reduction. That’s because from June 15th next year, the concept of roaming will cease to exist, at least among EU carriers and their customers. In the UK, Tesco Mobile is giving its users a transient taste of this level of freedom over the summer, by scrapping roaming charges across Europe until early September.

For Chris Longhouse of Barrie, Ontario, Canada, it all started the day his parents handed him his first plastic kit model to assemble at the kitchen table at age 6. It didn’t take the youngster long before he was elbows-deep in the build, canvassing the…

Formula D Pro2 Mk4 Supra – Checking In With RAD Dan

It was Ditch Day at work Thursday, so we picked up some nugs, pimped a 40, and headed to our buddy “RAD” Dan Burkett’s house because his folks were gone and we were ‘bout to get tore the f**k up. Well, actually, most of that didn’t happen, but we did get an invite from the mullet king himself to join him and RAD Industries accomplice Jeff Le as they prepped and shook down Burkett’s Mark IV Toyota Supra at Walt James Stadium on the grounds of Willow Springs International Motorsports Park before the team packs up for Round 1 of the Formula…

Ford Confirms EV Rival For Tesla Model 3, Chevy Bolt

Ford CEO, Mark Fields, has confirmed the company is readying its response to the Model 3 and Bolt EVs.

Asked on a possible 200-mile (322 km) range battery-electric car, Fields said the Blue Oval wants to be “among the leaders or in a leadership. Clearly, that’s something we’re developing for”, according to an AutomotiveNews report.

Part of Ford’s plan to add 13 hybrid or electric vehicles by the end of the decade, the new EV is believed to be the Model E, after the automaker gained the rights to use the nameplate two years ago after a “dispute” with Tesla Motors….

Will Moose Thrive or Die Because of Climate Change?

Lee Kantar lost two moose calves this past weekend. They are just a few among many calves that did not survive their first year in the forests of Maine. Kantar, a moose biologist for the state’s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, has only been tracking calves for a few years but early death is a trend he and others can see across the animal’s southern range, which stretches through the northern U.S. and Canada. Scientists speculate that young and adult moose alike are plagued by new diseases and parasites. Brain worm and winter ticks, for example, are…

No one likes the frustrating parts of customer service: the long hold times, multiple transfers, repeated requests for information, and unresolved issues. Trump University and the art of the get-rich seminar

Editor’s note: Though this isn’t usual Ars Technica fare, we’re publishing a non-tech story because we had a reporter with deep personal experience relevant to a topic of national interest.

In 2005, both of us became fixated on a late-night infomercial that promised access to “hundreds of billions of dollars” in “free government money.” As journalism grad students at the time, our evenings often ended with a couple beers as we decompressed by watching whatever was on our tiny 13″ TV. And what was on at the time—repeatedly—was a half-hour…

How Domino’s Put Automagic Pizza on Every Device. Like, Every Device

“Alexa,” I said, “order a Domino’s pizza.”

Alexa wasn’t having it.

Amazon’s electronic assistant foiled my first attempt at ordering a Domino’s pie through one of the company’s many platform plays. I also could have tweeted or texted or even turned on the TV. But I chose Amazon Echo because my Echo and I have a good rapport. Or we did, until I tried having it deliver a pizza to my mouth.

Alexa vexed me. I’d done the requisite work, setting up a Pizza Profile on the Domino’s desktop site, enabling the Domino’s “skill” in my Alexa app,…

Can tech teach kids to teach themselves? XPRIZE, Google, and the UN team up to find out

GLEXP_reading_rHundreds of millions of kids around the world lack access to, among other things, basic education — much less organized school systems with adequate teaching resources. XPRIZE is hoping that tech can help where humanitarian efforts have yet to make a dent — and putting $15 million on the line to that end, with the help of Google and the United Nations.

The goal is to create a software and hardware platform that will allow kids anywhere — but in Tanzania, to start — to pursue their own literacy education without the need for any top-down organization…

Jazz drumming to Super Smash Bros. is better than any commentary

I usually have a hard time following competitive Super Smash Bros. matches, but honestly, they make so much more sense when accompanied by some freeform jazz drumming. The video above shows what a perfect pairing this is — with drummer Caleb Goss providing a soundtrack to a January 2015 bout between players Armada_UGS and L3ff3n.

It’s amazing how well Goss matches his drumming with the characters’ attacks. Look at 1:04 for example, when Goss taps out Fox McCloud’s laser hits on the cymbal, or at 1:32 when he matches Princess Peach’s killer turnip blow…

Did you know that flour can explode? Luckily, this does not happen spontaneously on your kitchen counter, but only if the conditions are right. You need a very fine powder of flour to make an explosion happen. In fact, any solid flammable material that is dispersed in the air as a dust cloud will explode if it comes into contact with flame (a reason extreme caution must be used where there is a large amount of grain dust, such as in storage facilities). Why is that? It has to do with the particle…

Germany will offer 4,000 euro incentives for plug-in vehicles

The German government has agreed to a plug-in vehicle incentive plan that would hand out about $1.4 billion in perks to those who buy electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. About half of that funding will come from the German automakers themselves. Think of it as a wake-up call for a German plug-in vehicle sector that’s sort of been in snooze mode. Germany’s parliament still needs to approve the plan, which initially involved automakers paying for about 25 percent of the funding, Bloomberg News says, citing a press conference with German political…

Allergy-Free Peanuts? Not So Fast

My husband and I discovered our daughter’s peanut allergy while we were 35,000 feet in the air over Denver. Even though we knew she was allergic to eggs, our allergist had told us there was no reason to avoid any other foods, and so the week before I’d given her a bit of peanut butter and chalked up the slight rash she developed to eczema. As we began our descent into Denver, I gave her a bite of a protein bar. About ten minutes later she started screaming. Her face turned bright pink.

Nannette Abia Rivera’s external hard drive stopped working, and she needs to recover files stored on it.

When you store files on an external drive, it’s easy to forget my first rule of tech storage: Never have only one copy of anything. We tend to think of external drives—especially external hard drives—as a backup medium, so of course anything on the drive must be a backup.

But if files exist only on that external drive, they are not backed up. And you need to make sure they get backed up to something other than that particular drive—whether it’s an…
